- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan and line with parchment paper.
- In your large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined and lump-free.
- Make three wells in the dry ingredients. Pour the warm water into one well, vegetable oil into another, and vinegar into the third. Add vanilla extract over the entire mixture.
- Using a whisk or spatula, gently stir everything together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix—a few small lumps are perfectly fine.
- Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Room temperature ingredients help incorporate more evenly. Don't overmix to avoid tough cake. Start checking doneness at 25 minutes. Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
