Potatoes Au Gratin

A comforting dish that combines layers of tender potatoes with creamy cheese goodness, perfect for family gatherings and holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons softened unsalted butter (divided)
  • 3 pounds russet potatoes (peeled)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
  • 6 tablespoons grated Parmesan (divided)
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease a baking dish with 2 tablespoons of butter.
  2. Very thinly slice the potatoes. A mandolin can help achieve even slices if available.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the cream, shredded cheddar cheese, 4 tablespoons of Parmesan, and minced garlic.
  4. Add the sliced potatoes to the bowl and toss until well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste and toss again.
  5. Arrange coated potatoes upright in the greased baking dish and pour any leftover cream mixture over the top. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  6. Dot the top of the potatoes with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
  7. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, sprinkle the top with the remaining Parmesan, and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes until fork tender.
  9. Broil on high for 1 minute, or until the top is nicely browned.
  10. Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider adding different cheeses or a pinch of cayenne pepper. Slicing potatoes evenly ensures uniform cooking.
