Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 tablespoons (56 grams) salted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups (420 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon (9 grams) instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup (170 grams) lukewarm water (100110 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • 32 ounces 80/20 ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (or lard, bacon fat, or vegetable oil)
  • 8 slices white cheese (American, Cheddar, Provolone, Havarti, etc.)
  • Burger toppings: tomato, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, onions, pickles

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the softened butter, flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Gradually add the lukewarm water and the egg. Mix until a dough starts to form.
  3. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal pieces.
  6. Shape each piece into a skull shape using a skull-shaped mold or by hand.
  7. Place the shaped buns on a baking sheet and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  9. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely.
  11. While the buns cool, season the ground beef with salt and pepper.
  12. Form the beef into patties and cook on a grill or skillet until they reach your desired doneness.
  13. Top each cooked patty with a slice of cheese and cover until melted.
  14. Cut the skull-shaped buns in half and place a cheeseburger patty on the bottom half with your favorite toppings.
  15. Place the top half of the bun on and secure with a toothpick if necessary.
